Molasses Reef: A Protected Reef Rich with Marine Life

Molasses Reef is one of Key Largo’s most popular destinations for scuba diving and snorkeling, known for its impressive coral formations, abundant marine life and variety of individual dive sites. Located within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Molasses Reef is a protected Sanctuary Preservation Area (SPA), where harvesting, removing or possessing marine life and other natural resources is prohibited.
The reef is characterized by a series of well-defined coral spurs separated by sandy channels and areas of rubble. Some of the coral formations rise to within approximately 10 feet of the surface, while the sandy grooves between them reach depths of roughly 30 to 45 feet. This varied terrain makes Molasses Reef an excellent choice for everything from shallow snorkeling and beginner dives to longer explorations for experienced divers.
Across the reef, divers and snorkelers can find dense strands of sea fans and other soft corals, along with barrel sponges, yellow tube sponges and a variety of hard corals: Elkhorn, staghorn, star, brain and fire corals can all be found throughout different areas of the reef, creating a diverse habitat for the marine life that calls Molasses home.
Depending on the site and conditions, you may encounter sea turtles, nurse sharks, southern stingrays, and large schools of tropical reef fish. Molasses Reef also holds pieces of Key Largo’s maritime history, including a historic Spanish anchor and remnants of shipwrecks scattered throughout portions of the reef.
With more than 30 mooring buoys spread across a reef system extending over half a mile, Molasses Reef truly offers something for everyone.

Why Is It Called Molasses Reef, Anyway?
With a name like Molasses Reef, you have to wonder where it came from. The exact origin has never been confirmed, but local legend tells of a vessel carrying barrels of molasses that ran aground on the reef, leaving its cargo—and apparently its name—behind.
Whether the story is completely true or simply part of Florida Keys folklore, the name has been associated with this reef for well over a century. Today, Molasses Reef is known less for its mysterious name and more for its clear water, abundant fish and classic spur-and-groove reef formations.

Getting to Molasses Reef
Located offshore of Key Largo, Molasses Reef lies roughly five miles southeast of Rodriguez Key along the outer Florida Keys reef tract. Its position near a curve in the reef places Molasses farther towards the open waters of the Florida Straits.
The reef can only be reached by boat, with the ride from Key Largo generally taking about 40 minutes depending on the departure point and conditions that day.
Weather & Diving Conditions
Molasses Reef’s offshore location and proximity to the Gulf Stream often bring warm water and excellent visibility, making it a popular Key Largo dive destination year-round.
Conditions can vary across the reef, with some sites experiencing more current than others. On days with stronger current, portions of the outer reef can offer excellent opportunities for drift diving.

Whether you’re a newly certified diver or have years of experience underwater, Molasses Reef has something for everyone.
Molasses Reef is an excellent choice for newly certified divers because many of its dive sites are relatively shallow, creating an ideal setting to build experience and confidence underwater.
For underwater photographers, Molasses Reef is a dream. Schools of blue-striped grunts and mahogany snapper gather around the reef, while green sea turtles are always a welcome sight as they make their way over the coral. Southern stingrays can often be found resting along the sandy bottom, and the reef’s colorful corals, sponges and tropical fish provide plenty of subjects for both new and experienced underwater photographers.
Advanced divers can explore the deeper edge of Molasses Reef, where currents can create excellent conditions for drift diving. .
