"My 14 yr old son and I recently joined Sail Fish Scuba for a one day Discover Scuba adventure and it was an incredible experience! All communication from Michaela was timely and helpful and made planning our trip easy. We started the day in the pool with instruction from Megan and Emily and finished the day with two ocean dives with Megan and T. This was our first experience diving and everyone at Sail Fish made it fun, enjoyable and comfortable. I would highly recommend visiting Sail Fish Scuba on your next trip to Key Largo! Thank you T, Michaela, Megan and Emily for an unforgettable experience! See you next time!"

The PADI Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) experience is a fun, one-day introduction to the world of scuba diving—perfect for anyone aged 10 and up who’s curious about what it’s like to breathe underwater. While it’s not a certification course, it’s a great way to explore the underwater environment and see if diving is right for you. During the session, you'll learn the basics of scuba safety, get comfortable with the dive equipment, and practice core scuba skills in shallow water—all under the direct supervision of a certified PADI Instructor.
The highlight? You’ll take your first breaths underwater—a truly unforgettable experience. For those feeling confident, there’s also an optional open water reef dive, giving you the chance to explore a real dive site and encounter vibrant marine life up close.
Discover what’s beneath the surface with PADI Discover Scuba Diving—your first step into an exciting new world!
1. Signing Up:
Your DSD experience starts with a bit of paperwork, including the Diver Medical Participant Questionnaire. This form helps ensure you’re medically fit to dive and must be completed before any in-water activities. If you answer "yes" to certain questions, you may need a medical doctor’s approval before participating — so it’s best to review the form in advance.
2. Theory Session:
You'll start with a short theory session, which includes watching an informational video introduction to scuba diving. The video covers the essentials: how diving works, the effects of pressure underwater, hand signal communication, and the equipment you’ll be using. After the video, you'll complete a mini quiz to highlight the key points and reinforce what you've learned about dive theory. Your instructor will then review everything with you, answer any questions, and make sure you feel confident before getting in the water.
3. Confined Water Session:
Next, you'll suit up and enter a pool or calm, shallow water with pool-like conditions. Your PADI dive professional will guide you through essential scuba skills such as breathing through your regulator and managing your buoyancy with the BCD (Buoyancy Control Device). You’ll also practice important techniques like clearing your mask, recovering your regulator, equalizing your ears, and safely entering and exiting the water.
4. Open Water Dives:
If you’re ready for more adventure, the open water dive gives you the chance to explore real marine life under supervision. You’ll dive to a maximum depth of 12 meters (40 feet), with your PADI dive professional by your side from start to finish.
You don’t need to be an Olympic swimmer to join a Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) experience, but you should feel comfortable and at ease in the water. This beginner-friendly program gives you a taste of scuba diving with a PADI dive professional guiding you every step of the way. You’ll learn a few simple skills and experience what it’s like to breathe underwater, all with plenty of support and supervision.
During the Discover Scuba Diving experience, the maximum depth is up to 6 meters (20 feet) in the training pool and up to 12 meters (40 feet) for the optional open water dive.
No, PADI Discover Scuba Diving is not a certification. It's a one-day introductory experience designed to give you a taste of what scuba diving is like, without the time or commitment required for a full certification course.
While you won’t earn a certification card, the skills you learn can be credited toward the PADI Open Water Diver course if you decide to continue your scuba education within a certain time frame.
When you arrive in the morning, we’ll start by verifying that all waivers and required student paperwork are complete, including the liability release and diver medical form. If you haven’t already filled these out during booking, you’ll complete them on-site. After check-in, you’ll be introduced to your PADI dive professional , who will guide you through the day’s experience and answer any questions before your adventure begins!
