Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@sailfishscuba.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Snorkeling is a surface-water activity where you swim while wearing a mask and a snorkel. The mask lets you see clearly underwater, and the snorkel allows you to breathe while floating at the surface—so you can enjoy marine life and underwater scenery without holding your breath or using scuba gear.

Our snorkeling tours are unguided, allowing you to explore the reef at your own pace. If you’d prefer a more personalized experience, private snorkeling guides are available upon request and at an extra cost. Please let us know at the time of booking so we can ensure guide availability.

To go snorkeling, you’ll need a mask, snorkel, and fins. Here, we’ll fit you with all the necessary gear.

When snorkeling, wear a swimsuit and a rash guard to help protect your skin from the sun. A wetsuit is also a great option for added warmth and protection, especially in cooler water. Here in the Florida Keys, we recommend wetsuits from November through April due to cooler water temperatures. Additionally, since our activities take place in the open ocean, we occasionally do share the water with jellyfish. Their presence is of course intermittent and unpredictable, but if this is a concern for you, we strongly recommend wearing a wetsuit or rash guard for extra protection. Be sure to apply reef-safe sunscreen to any exposed skin, including your face.

To snorkel from our dive vessel, you must be a comfortable and confident swimmer. While snorkeling, you should always remain aware of your surroundings, including marine life and the location of the boat.  While you’re in the water, our captain and deckhand are continuously monitoring all snorkelers to ensure safety at all times.

Here at Sail Fish Scuba, we provide high-visibility safety vests to keep you safe while snorkeling. Noodles are also available to help you float effortlessly, ensuring a relaxing  snorkeling experience.

If you are a weak swimmer or a non-swimmer, our Discover Snorkeling Day is a great option, as it offers a more supportive environment while still allowing you to enjoy the water.

 Christ of the Abyss
Christ of the Abyss is a fun and iconic snorkeling site suitable for all experience levels. The famous statue stands approximately 9 feet tall and rests on the ocean floor, surrounded by vibrant marine life. This area is known for its beautiful large fan corals, colorful reef fish, and excellent visibility. Snorkelers often spot southern stingrays, barracuda, snappers, grunts, and a variety of tropical fish, making this a must-see Key Largo location.

Snapper Ledge
Snapper Ledge truly lives up to its name, hosting an abundance of marine life. This site is well known for large schools of snapper, along with groupers, nurse sharks, and other reef inhabitants. It’s a great spot for snorkelers who enjoy action-packed reefs and frequent fish encounters.

Molasses Reef
Molasses Reef is one of the most popular snorkeling sites in the Florida Keys, and for good reason. It features beautiful coral formations, excellent visibility, and diverse marine life. Sea turtles are commonly seen, along with schools of tropical fish, making it a favorite for both first-time and returning snorkelers.

Horseshoe Reef
Horseshoe Reef is one of our favorite spots and sits a bit closer to shore. This location is known for large schools of fish and top-notch marine life. With only a few mooring buoys available, it’s often in high demand, but well worth the visit when accessible.
